Abstract:
A remark of Professor Piggott's gives rise to a re-examination of the reliability of pottery rim forms for the purposes of (a) classification and (b) constructing chronological schemes for the Irish Neolithic. The fragmentary nature of the surviving remains means that rims are the only pieces occurring in sufficient quantities to be classified. Further, rim forms can be shown to have regional significance, and for handmade pottery they constitute a sensitive cultural index. Their usefulness for chronological schemes is less clear, since although simple rims can be shown to be early, some complex rims also appear in early contexts.
