Abstract:		 Describes the geophysical examination and subsequent excavation of the remains of a charcoal-burning platform in the vicinity of Cae Capel, Llanelen, where earlier excavation of a medieval stone structure had revealed quantities of iron slag. An almost complete skeleton of a pony was found in the topsoil. Under the topsoil, the platform was covered in a layer which contained over thirty large pieces of charcoal, one piece of which was radiocarbon dated to between 1413 and 1669 cal AD. A trench, which was the remains of a flue, had been cut into the platform, the wider end of which may have held a support for the stack of wood during the burning process. The platform was cut into the side of a slope, and the at the front of the platform was a row of post-holes. Specialist reports include
