Abstract:
A reconsideration of the texts in an attempt to discover Vortigern's real place in 5th cent Britain. The tradition about him is indisputably Kentish in origin, perhaps becoming attached to Welsh tradition in early 9th cent. His power was probably centred on the lower Severn (?Gloucester), and included overlordship of Kent, but its northwards extent cannot be assessed. It probably did not include Wales, although his descendants moved into Powys in ?5th-6th cent. Vortigern probably had a number of equals, including Ambrosius Aurelianus. There seems no good reason to connect him with either Germanus of Auxerre or St Germanus in Wales.
