Abstract:
A fine sculptured circular table-top discovered in the mound at Caerleon Castle was well recorded in late 18th and early 19th centuries and a reconstruction can be essayed. It had a single pedestal, a perforation probably intended for libations in the manner of a pipe burial, and depicted Venus holding a dolphin (symbol of rebirth). The subject, form, and find-spot near a known Roman cemetery all combine to indicate a funerary purpose.
