Abstract:
Reports on the results of a magnetometer survey and subsequent excavations that revealed traces of IA and RB occupation comprising circular structures, ditches and gullies. Radiocarbon dating was undertaken due to a lack of dateable cultural material -- the majority of the samples yielded dates between mid fourth century BC and mid first century AD. Finds and environmental material included pottery (mainly IA and Roman); briquetage; stone artefacts; Roman tile; ironwork; `Roman glass' by Sally Worrell (26); `Plant remains' by Marijke van der Veen (28--33); and `Soil analysis' by Andrew Millard (33--4). A re-evaluation of the hoard also looks at the unpublished iron (including hoops from a wooden stave vessel) and copper-alloy items. `EDXRF analysis of horse harness from the hoard' is by David B Dungworth (37 & 38--40).
