Abstract:
Reports on rescue excavations undertaken on the site of St Giles medieval hospital between 1988 and 1990 because of the threat of river erosion. Medieval and later phases are reported elsewhere (see 97/1703), and this report concentrates on evidence from the Mesolithic to Iron Age, noting a lack of occupation in the Roman and Early Medieval phases evinced by the accumulation of colluvial deposits. Francis Wenban-Smith (33--5) considers the (mostly Meso) `Lithic artefacts'. T G Manby describes `Iron Age pottery' (35--6) and a stone `Spindle whorl' (36). Jacqueline P Huntley (36--7) reports on `Carbonised plant remains'. Maureen McHugh (37--8) discusses `Soil analysis' and considers the interface between colluvial and alluvial deposits. A charcoal-rich layer was radiocarbon-dated to the Late Neo or EBA.
