Abstract:
Small excavations near the mansion revealed prehistoric cross-ploughing, early med timber buildings, a later trackway, peasant buildings, moat, and buildings ?related to the castle. Pottery of 12th-16th century was mostly of Hartlepool type ware. Important changes to the landscape are indicated in later 12th century, with the castle intruding into late AS bovate-holdings farmed from ?dispersed crofts, and an open field system created on the solskifte principle. Two two-row villages were laid out. Such powerful reorganization argues for St Cuthbert's church at Durham as the responsible authority.
