Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavations in Railway Street revealed the nave of the medieval church which served both the parish of St John and the Priory. The church was constructed in the twelfth century, extended in the fifteenth century and demolished during the Dissolution; it was rebuilt as a family chapel in the seventeenth century. A bell-founding pit was recorded, some evidence of priory buildings was recovered, and many burials were excavated from the church and surrounding churchyard. Finds reports include `Coins' by Barrie Cook (56); copper-alloy objects; lead and white metal objects, ironwork; architectural stone; and `Glazed floor tiles' (62--5) and `Pottery' (65--7), both by Elizabeth Peiksma. `The pathology of the burials' is discussed by Tony Waldron (67--73). | ||||||||||||||||
