Abstract:
Recently rediscovered earthworks in Grotto Wood represent the survival of an unusual post-medieval formal garden, associated with Roxford Manor House. They include a mount, three ponds, the site of a reputed grotto, and a raised gravel perimeter walk. The gardens, which may have been created between 1675 and 1725, were first recorded on a 1766 map of Hertfordshire. They seem to have been deliberately destroyed between 1775 and 1789, and the site then reverted to coppiced woodland.
