Abstract:
TQ 064025. Backfilling of a series of U-section ditches occurred before the building of the palace (from 1279) and the priory (by 1312). Rescue excavations on the site of a service courtyard revealed a cellar dated to 1291-2, 74ft x 16 internally and vaulted in six quadripartite bays. A gravel path down the centre with flanking post-holes suggested barrel storage; entry was originally by a stair, later replaced by a shallower ramp. Small finds included jetons and vessel glass. Details fallen from a building erected over the cellar after 1388 included an iron-grilled window, a stone fireplace with graffiti (birds, heraldry, musical score) and an elaborate chimney stack. Stained glass of 1368 from the priory is also described. D F R
