Abstract:
SP 973093; TL 038056; TL 043060. Brings together reports on the villa excavations at Northchurch, at Boxmoor House School and at Hemel Hempstead Station and discusses them in their Hertfordshire context. At Northchurch, occupation spans the mid-1st to mid-4th centuries and shows development from a possible timber house to a twelve-room villa. At Boxmoor House, first dug by Sir John Evans in the 1850s and re-examined in the 1960s, an early timber building was destroyed by fire and replaced by a cob-built house, several times reconstructed and finally reduced by a half. The building and well found at the railway station in 1851 were relocated in 1967.
