Excavations at Bottle Bank, Gateshead, confirmed that the site was settled in the Roman period, with indications that there may have been native Iron Age occupation. A complex system of Roman ditches and gullies was revealed, possibly part of a water management system, with at least two stone lined pits containing pottery dating to the late-second and early-third centuries AD. Part of a metalled road surface and the remains of a stone building were also identified. Later occupation evidence included the foundation of a substantial medieval building, waterlogged rubbish and cess pits from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries with organic remains, and post-medieval rubbish pits from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. | ||||||||||||||||||||
