Abstract:
Updated interim report, following post-excavation work, on the excavation of prehistoric remains predating the Roman fort at South Shields. Mesolithic flint scatters were succeeded by a shallow segmented scoop or ditch of probable Early Neolithic date, possibly part of a causewayed enclosure. A scatter of pits, hollows and scoops, and a curvilinear feature, possibly a shelter, have been radiocarbon dated to the later-fourth millennium cal BC. These were succeeded by an unenclosed Iron Age farming settlement with a single roundhouse, from the interior of which evidence of different areas of use was obtained. The roundhouse was destroyed by fire in 390--170 cal BC, and the site was protected from further damage by the overlying Roman deposits.
