Abstract: |
Some of the semi-regular grid systems of field boundaries in eastern England have been claimed to be Roman or earlier in origin. This paper examines one such system in detail and questions the idea that the Roman road is an insertion into an earlier co-axial pattern. Any apparent conformity is coincidental and other boundaries, such as those of parishes, do not follow this pattern. It is argued that the pattern is post-medieval and not the relic of a pre-medieval farmscape. |
