Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reviews of the following publications: 'Rabbits, Warrens and Archaeology' (Williamson, Stroud, 2007) by Paul Everson (77-78) which argues that the author fails to properly engage with recent ideas concerning the religious significance of rabbits, suggesting that this may be due to the work's target audience of "intelligent laymen";\r\n'Landscape Evolution in the Middle Thames Valley, Heathrow Terminal 5 excavation. Volume 1, Perry Oak' (Framework Archaeology, Oxford and Salisbury, 2006), and `From Hunter Gatherers to Huntsmen. A history of the Stansted landscape' (Framework Archaeology, Oxford and Salisbury, 2008) by Stephen Rippon (90-91) where the reviewer notes that the CDs containing specialist reports, which accompanied both volumes, were unreadable on the reviewer's computers;\r\n`Iron Age Societies in the Severn-Cotswolds' (Moore, Oxford, 2006) by Adam Gwilt (92-93) where the site-based methodology used for quantifying the archaeological resource is criticized, arguing that it is likely to introduce skewing and bias. Also argues that the inclusion of south-east Wales and Herefordshire is questionable, and may have caused overstretching of the coverage; `Religion, Community and Territory. Defining religion in the Severn Valley and adjacent hills from the Iron Age to the Early Medieval period' (Yeates, Oxford, 2006) by Della Hooke, 93-94 where it is argued that the author's claims that continuity in religion can be detected throughout the period covered rest on extremely flimsy evidence, and are unconvincing. Also notes factual errors and assumptions in the dating of sites used as evidence; `Archaeology of Southwest Ireland, 1570-1670' (Breen, Dublin, 2007) by Michael Potterton (105) describes the work as containing numerous typographic, grammatical, and factual errors, and lacking in references; \r\n`The Archaeology of Improvement in Britain, 1750-1850' (Cambridge, 2007) by Sarah Tarlow notes occasional errors, which the reviewer attributes to the author's stated lack of expertise in some of the areas covered. Also argues that the work attempts to impose an overarching explanatory model without fully exploring how the philosophies behind that model emerged. PP-B | |||
