Abstract:
SY 405944. Re-examination after cleaning of these objects (said to have come from a barrow) suggests the existence of a small, probably short-lived Saxon settlement of mid-5th to mid-6th cent; it would be further west than any other of this date. Several spearheads are of common type for the early pagan period, though one has an engraved symbol (?fish). An axe with asymmetrical blade could be of pagan Saxon date. There is an early shield boss and a small long brooch of mid-5th to mid-6th cent type. Hardown thus resembles the eastern pagan cemeteries, and its position near the coast could have permitted a rather premature settlement or invasion movement. A few hill-sites in S Somerset have produced pagan Saxon objects, possibly representing border contacts only; none are normal pagan cemeteries. Reconsideration of the features on Hardown Hill indicates that the ditched mound with four peripheral "ring-barrows" is unlikely to be a disc barrow; it may have been the source of these finds, but there are several other barrows nearby.
