Abstract:
Attempts to assess the real contribution to the public understanding of archaeology made by GED as famous television presenter. As he himself sensed, his championing of good scholarly publications (as in Ancient Peoples and Places) has proved more lasting than the broadcasts, and has encouraged other publishers to work the same field. Antiquity, which he edited for three decades, was a 'brilliant and unqualified success' with its accurate, up-to-date reports, vigorous reviewing policy, and personal stamp; and he kept it going even when its leisured readership had to give some place to the new professionals.
