Abstract:
The article explores the distinctive location of several medieval churches within late prehistoric hillforts in Buckinghamshire and considers some possible explanatory models. It is suggested that the most likely explanation is that the churches were founded next to early medieval seigneurial settlements, usually as private chapel, raising further questions about early medieval Buckinghamshire and the long-term significance of some hillfort sites.
