Abstract:
the paper outlines the importance of studying skeletal part abundance with respect to economic anatomy, discusses the current methodology in this field, and describes a new method for examining archaeological skeletal part abundance, with respect to bone transportation models. The application of optimal foraging theory (to which the method is closely linked) to the question of bone transportation by hunters is discussed. The new methodology is illustrated by application to two ethnographic examples from Inuit sites, and issues related to its application to archaeological assemblages are discussed
