examines sampling strategies for soil phosphorus analysis which take account of the background heterogeneity of P in soil, and examines the phosphorus distribution of two upland acidic soils, one improved and the other unimproved, but both used as rough grazing for sheep. The results are presented as distribution maps and the variation present at each scale assessed; contents of total P examined show that considerable background variation can exist over a wide range of sampling intervals, but that this is not sufficient to obscure archaeological P anomalies using standard tests of significance | |
