Abstract:		 describes the analysis of seven peat cores from the vicinity of a major copper mine of the eighteenth/nineteenth centuries AD but also known to be an important archaeological site of Bronze Age, and possibly Roman, mining. Known historic details of mining are detectable in the stratigraphy of Cu, Pb and Zn levels in one sediment core from an estuary 12km downstream from the mines; there is also possible evidence of an earlier, prehistoric phase of mining. Other peat cores with no connection to the mines show only background levels for these metals
