Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Gabbroic Ware from Cornwall has been analysed, using x-ray diffraction, in order to provide data for a new approach to characterising archaeological ceramics. The approach depends not on the identification of distinctive or diagnostic components, but on the relationship of the gross mineral compounds expressed as a mineralogical index. A pilot study has shown that the technique shows consistency of results after repeat analysis. It has also been shown that the statistically grouped indices indicate the identification of sub-sets within the main classification. This sensitivity allows the potential for the development of a rapid, minimally-destructive method for the identification of archaeological ceramics. | |||||
