Abstract:
Phase I of the re-evaluation of Tintagel has seen numerous publications on the pottery and the field evidence. Whereas some problems of the 5th-6th century will need excavation to elucidate, the type and scale of material evidence already suggests comparisons with the 'centre of tribute' at Dunadd. Further, the makeup and distribution of the Mediterranean imports to the SW peninsula suggests at least one commercial voyage, pottery and ?wine being brought to trade for (most likely) tin ingots around the Cornish coast and across to Dinas Powis; evidence in support of this theory is mapped in detail. Three other such voyages could account for finds in Ireland, Wales, and SW Scotland.
