Abstract:
Sumarises the conclusions of recent archaeological and historical studies, which suggest that the urban centre flourished well into the seventh century. The basilica excavations have revealed that a major programme of redevelopment took place in the mid sixth century, with new roads and several public buildings being constructed around a large wooden mansion. The mansion, which resembled a Roman villa, may have been the palace of a local magnate, and historical evidence indicates that Wroxeter was at the centre of a sub-kingdom of Powys. It is suggested that the sub-kingdom was ceded peacefully to the Mercians in the seventh century.
