Abstract:
Discusses boundaries as forms of social exclusion and of status rather than as pure defence. An RB villa indicated status, but non-villa sites could have substantial enclosure walls, perhaps deriving from pre-Roman notions of status. There may be oscillation between open and enclosed settlements, and ritual behaviours may be a factor. Defence may have been the original need, with status accruing naturally thereafter.
