Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Some fundamental issues of attribution, description, and explanation in British archaeology are addressed. We should try to interpret and depict landscape as it appeared to its inhabitants, avoiding chronocentrism and unnecessarily derogatory terms like 'wetland'. A brief history of research at Flag Fen is offered, with its interpretations unfolding and changing as new evidence (eg the 2000-timber alignment) was revealed. Communication with the public needs care, as we archaeologists are too accustomed to talking amongst ourselves. There is no wish at Flag Fen to present a 'right' interpretation - the complexity is identified for the public even if it cannot be interpreted. Terminology and functional attributions are discussed.
