Abstract:
A mathematical treatment of four common measures of the relative proportions of different pottery types present in one or more contexts (sherd count, sherd weight, vessels represented and vessel-equivalents recovered). On certain assumptions and criteria it is shown that 'vessel-equivalents' is the best measure of the four, whilst 'vessels represented' should not be used as a comparative measure. Further criteria and associated problems are outlined. D F R
