Report of a conference of the Theoretical Archaeology Group (Southampton, December 1980) which appeared to ignore L R Binford's warning against 'wallowing in opinionated paradigmatic debate'. No major theoretical advance in the last ten years could be identified, and 'middle-range theory' is now the aim rather than attempting to find universal cross-cultural laws of human behaviour. Statistical relevance models attracted attention, and there was a critique of structuralism and a paper on applications of catastrophe theory. |
