The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 An excavation was carried out within the site of the First Battle of Newbury (1643) but evidence of the battle was limited to the find of a 17th century musket ball. The excavation produced some evidence of a Romano-British field system, most notably a trackway or droveway aligned on the nearby villa site. A roundhouse, four-post structures, postholes and ditches belonging to an unenclosed Middle Iron Age farmstead, were also found. Sites of this date are rare in the Lower Kennet Valley. The distribution of pottery and loomweights in relation to the roundhouse indicated some ordered use of space, while environmental samples provided evidence of the local economy and for two types of on-site crop storage.
