Abstract:
Interim report on an ongoing study involving fieldwalking along a four-mile stretch of the river Evenlode, a tributary of the Thames, about ten miles north-west of Oxford. Work undertaken between 1984 and 1992 identified four prehistoric settlement sites or concentrations of lithic artefacts, two of which have been exhaustively surveyed. The material recovered shows a chronological continuity from the Late Mesolithic to the Early Bronze Age. The general impression from the material from all four sites is of variable but mostly uninspired knapping skills using sparse flint resources. The importance of recording the provenance of fieldwalking finds as an aid to future research is emphasised. LD
