Excavations at the site of a proposed quarry extension near Town Farm, Burlescombe, exposed the remains of three Saxon iron-smelting furnaces dating from between the late-eighth and late-tenth centuries. The furnaces are non-slag-tapping, open bowls with no substantial superstructure beyond a baffle wall protecting the bellows and forming the blowing-hole. In these, slag accumulated forming large, heterogeneous blocks. The presence of hammerscale and the nature of the slags produced in the furnaces suggest, in the absence of evidence for smithing hearths, that the furnaces had a dual function: the first to produce a bloom of iron from the raw materials, the second to re-heat the blooms for smithing.
