Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In the medieval period the bishops of Exeter had a substantial manor house at Chudleigh. The paper reviews the documentary evidence relating to the site, presents a field survey of the earthworks, and describes a detailed examination of the standing buildings. The fragmentary remains indicate that the complex had an irregular plan, with large stone buildings loosely arranged within a walled precinct, probably with internal courtyards. The best-preserved structure consists of a pair of vaulted cellars; these are interpreted as part of a hall range with chambers on the first floor, probably datable to the late-thirteenth or early-fourteenth century.
