Abstract:
No. 2 Broadgate adjoins the site of Broad Gate, formerly the principal entrance to Exeter Cathedral Close. The medieval gatehouse was demolished in 1825 and the adjoining property now has an early-nineteenth-century façade; this, however, conceals a complex structural history incorporating the remains of several medieval and post-medieval buildings. Parts of a fifteenth- or sixteenth-century timber-framed house survive, including moulded timber ceilings and painted decorations. The report describes the structural and documentary evidence for the development of the properties collated during extensive refurbishment works in 1995--6. Includes
