Abstract:
Report on observations made during works to replace lightning conductors at the Church of St Mary, Ottery St Mary, during 2005. Significant observations were made in two of the six pits, one of these being located close to the south tower, east of the south porch. The north face of a fairly substantial wall aligned east--west was exposed; it was constructed of flint nodules and rubble sandstone, bonded in lime mortar and no dressed facing stones were visible. In both pits fragments of medieval earthenware floor-tile were recovered from graveyard soils. Separately authored appendices include
