Abstract: Five memorial stones discovered in the nineteenth century have been subject to various theories, particularly one that sees them as outliers of the south west British series, and another that views them as being the product of Breton craftspeople working in exile. This note assesses the evidence and concludes that they are more likely to have been a product of the former tradition, and earlier than the ninth century.
