Abstract:
Magnetometer survey and excavations continued at this small Romano-British town. Survey results are still being processed but show about eight enclosures lying either side of a Roman road, and clusters of probable pits or wells. Excavation has now uncovered half of one enclosure and four main phases have been identified beginning around the second century AD. The development of features within the enclosure is described including ditches and evidence of a timber building, later destroyed by fire, which resembles continental buildings of the Roman Iron Age not previously noted in Britain. An appendix, `East Bursea Farm: trial excavations in 1990' by Peter Halkon (41), notes the investigation, as part of the same project, of a medieval chapel site which revealed a ditch containing Romano-British pottery and slag, and an area of limestone rubble.
