Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Morphological mapping and sediment coring of the post-glacial alluvial fills of the river Rede valley was carried out to clarify the picture of changing Holocene land-use. Excavation of a supposed stone barge-wharf proved it to be the result of natural river erosion and not evidence of the fort's possible role in the `Piercebridge' model of a river-based military supply network. Radiocarbon dating of wood fragments set the results in a chronological framework and revealed that infilling of river channels took place after the Roman withdrawal, 300--1350 BP. AR | ||||||
