Abstract:
Twenty years of research into quarrying practices associated with Bath stone produces the following summary. Notes on the geology and history of works in the area are followed by descriptions of the eight basic quarry types and there is a gazetteer of sites from these groups that have visible surface features. There follows a description of working methods beginning with hillside outcrop and hole quarries. In these instances only details of the quarry structure are available -- few details of tools or lifting methods remain. Underground quarrying is then described. This includes details of different working sequences using hand tools including picks, chips and wedges, jadding irons, holing irons and scappling axes. Mechanised quarrying began c mid nineteenth century with steam powered sawing machines. Further technological developments up to the present day are described and there are brief notes on ceiling supports and lighting, before a final `Appendix 1: plant & equipment at Monks Park quarry ca. 1965' (38).
