Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Military and political history from AD 84/85 to 258 is reconsidered. Among many important points appear the following: IX Hispana survived beyond 119; there was possibly an expeditio Britannica in 125-30; the Wall began in 122; the dismantling of parts of it was the work of Romans, not barbarians. I Hamiorum was continuously in garrison at Carvoran from late Hadrian to Calpurnius Agricola. Birrens and Risingham were held as outposts of Hadrian's Wall in period Ib. There is only one Ulpius Marcellus, governor of Britain. There was no "disaster" in 197; the Antonine Wall (the only occupied wall at the time) was destroyed in c 207; other sites destroyed almost all lie close to Dere Street in the path of a subsequent raid down it. The series of 3rd century building-inscriptions over 30-40 years (given in an appendix) does not suggest emergency repairs after widespread damage. Severus intended to conquer all Scotland; Caracalla abandoned this plan. Dates proposed: HW Ia 122-140; AW 1140-158; HW Ib 158-181; AW II 184-207; HW II 211-. B D | ||
