Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
From the end of the 1st century AD to the early 3rd century there was an attempt in all units to train future centurions by promotions which involved the tenure of both administrative and tactical posts. The career patterns attested are traced with their chronological development for the Rome cohorts, the legions, the auxilia and the equites singulares Augusti. The praetorian cohorts had a highly organized scheme; the legions with longer traditions, longer service and more numerous posts had greater variety in paths of promotion. After the end of the Severan dynasty the system broke down; soldiers had either a purely administrative or a purely tactical career. B D | ||||
