Abstract:
NY 974837. Summarizes evidence obtained since 1958 on the decline and abandonment of this post-medieval village, as seen in the context of a recent study of over 200 (mainly shrunken) villages in south Northumberland. Archaeological evidence for the physical form of the houses and the economic basis is summarized. A major reorganization occurred in West Whelpington between AD 1400 and 1550, and further reorganization in late 17th century reduced the number of farmsteads. Final, deliberate depopulation came in 1720. Livestock were more important than arable and there was no evidence for cattle being housed in separate outbuildings.
