Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Zooarchaeologists have become confident in their inferences about animal remains because of their understanding of the causal and functional links between attributes of these remains and the processes and contexts which generate them. The present shift toward making wider inferences about the context and function of bones in ancient hominids' behavioural systems and regional ecosystems is resulting in less inferential confidence. This effect arises from several sources and zooarchaeologists now need a different set of inferential strategies. This essay explores the various causes of lowered inferential confidence and suggests strategies for coping with them. It advances a philosophical argument for juxtaposing multiple, independent clusters of relational analogies, drawn from a wide variety of sources, and has implications for any research using middle range theory. |
