Abstract:
Conceives of archaeological method as a series of inverse transforms aiming to convert dead archaeological cultures into live, dynamic systems with functions and meaning. The formulation of models is crucial to the method. Analysis of archaeological contexts into entities and qualities is followed by search for structure in the data, perhaps using mathematical algorithms. The third stage is explanation by means of modelling and comparison with the synthesized structures. Finally a new, improved model is formulated and the iterative process may then begin again.
