Abstract:
The owner and author gathers the evidence surrounding this fake reliquary, discovered in Avenham Park. The inscription `As the pain-gallows protect us so the Lord protects King Eadred' would initially indicate an Anglo-Saxon date. X-ray fluorescence identified the metal as silver and further analysis diagnosed the transparent cover as rock quartz and the setting for the wood itself as rose quartz. The vessel, however, is thought to be later than the tenth century date that the inscription would imply. Nonetheless, it may not have been constructed to deceive people but rather to house a genuine relic -- possibly a piece of the `True Cross' that may actually have been venerated in Anglo-Saxon times.
