Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Summarises the current state of knowledge of earthwork castles in Ireland following recent fieldwork in Leinster. A total of 476 mottes and 63 ringworks have now been identifed in the whole of Ireland. The article briefly describes the background to the study of earthwork castles before assessing the contribution made by excavation, documentary study and field survey. The problem of identifying native Gaelic fortifications (as opposed to those built by Anglo-Norman settlers) is discussed and the relative rarity of ringworks is considered. The author concludes that, while field reconnaisance has contributed much to the study of Irish earthwork castles, there is a lack of evidence from excavations and he expresses a wish for an Irish equivalent of Hen Domen. | |
