Abstract:
The second part of an account of the defences of the three harbours (at Berehaven, Lough Swilly, and Queenstown) which were covered by special provisions under the terms of the Treaty of 6 December 1921. The Treaty established the Irish Free State as a Dominion but enabled the British Government to continue to use these strategic ports until 1938. The history of the defence of these so-called Treaty Ports is outlined and the gun batteries, which remain largely intact, are described. There is also an appendix entitled `Articles of agreement for a treaty between Great Britain and Ireland, dated the sixth day of December, nineteen hundred and twenty-one' (45).
