Abstract:
Speidel's assumption that the career of Tiberius Claudius Maximus proved a 5/6 ratio of basic auxiliary pay to basic legionary is unjustified. The basis, Domaszewski's four pay grades (basic, 1½ basic, double and treble) was worked out on evidence for the Rome cohorts and ignores variations in the point at which the post of optio centuriae was held. Treble pay is not in fact attested anywhere, the auxilia having the simple structure: basic-1½ basic-double, as the Dura papyri show. For all units, the scheme suggested here is: milites and immunes - basic; junior staff officers, tesserarius and ?custos armorum - 1½ basic; optio, standard bearers and senior staff officers - double. Maximus apparently accepted a transfer with reduced pay in exchange for better promotion prospects. B D
