Considers the best known example of the genre -- the Berechtuine slab -- in its wider context. Details of known examples are given, followed by a history of the stones and details of the inscriptions. Art-historical evidence and the interpretation of Berechtuine as being the Old English name Beorhtwine would point to a pre-tenth century date. Techniques, cross-types and connections with the Lindisfarne Gospel art are explored although over-reliance on the influence of Lindisfarne as an explanation for the development of Tullylease inscriptions and carvings is cautioned against. Having placed the most famous Tullylease example in its regional context there is a call to see this collection in a broader national context. | |
