Abstract:
The 1995 Toller Memorial Lecture argues that early medieval sculptors, for good theological and social reasons, sought like manuscript painters to express the importance and meaning of their work by invoking the prestige of metalwork. Some of the key evidence for this assertion lies in the Sandbach crosses, Cheshire, but sculpture after sculpture betrays the influence of metalwork.
