Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the concept of ethnic identity, and the empirical study of that concept, in relation to the immigrant communities of early Anglo-Saxon England. The author reviews the evidence available for Anglo-Saxon settlement, including that of Bede and of various place-names, and examines the emergence of a concept of Englishness, along with markers of identity such as language, history and tradition, including literary tradition. He goes on to consider the role of material culture in constructing the notion of ethnic identity and in marking changes in that identity, including examples drawn from items of jewellery and dress. The role of language change in early Anglo-Saxon culture is discussed, and the author concludes by presenting his hypothesis concerning the links between linguistic history, ethnic identity and political organization. | |||||||
